London - overpriced and substandard?

London is a city that many people can only dream of being a part of. It offers some of the world’s best-paid jobs, an endless network of exciting career opportunities in an extraordinary wealth of sectors, an unrivalled cultural diversity that presents itself in every borough, district and street, representing the entire globe within one city. London has a air of ‘infinity’ – an impression of timelessness and grandeur that is exhibited in the impeccable blend of the ‘historic’ with the ‘modern’.

The British capital is remarkable in its ability to reinvent its universal image and maintain its vivid history, instead of losing itself in an attempt to modernise, without preserving its original identity. This has been the misfortune of many European cities.

However, there is a clear price to pay if you want to be a part of his enormous playground and help it to continue to remain a leading world city. The costs of renting in many parts of London are among the highest of any city in the world. The tax of living in a place filled to the brim with so many opportunities is extortionate.

Everyone living here is a customer of a massive ’wealth-generating’ machine. Landlords squeeze as many tenants into their properties as they can in order to maximise their profits. If you are looking at a monthly rent below £500 a month (exclusive of bills, of course!), then expect to share a bathroom with 2,3 or even 4 people. Consider a living room as a luxury, let alone a guest room or a garden. Many landlords convert living rooms and studies/guest rooms into bedrooms in order to stack up thousands of extra pounds each year. Some accommodation, particularly student residences, can be so cramped that it becomes almost uninhabitable (if you enjoy the comfort of your own space).

The only means by which to live at ease in the British capital is to become rich, like getting a job in email marketing. In this city, money is what makes the sun shine, lack of it is what makes the sun set. There is no such thing as ‘value for money’ here.
